Erhu
Erhu is a chair inspired by the erhu, a traditional Chinese string instrument. The design uses national culture as a language of modern furniture and explores a contemporary Chinese style. The structure is simple, with only two parts: the seat surface and the legs. The chair back, seat surface and front leg form one piece of curved plywood pressed in a premade mold. The surface is veneered with ash wood and walnut, and the legs are made of walnut. The shape of the back leg recalls the hoof shaped leg of Ming style furniture. The curves follow the human body.
Erhu Chair by Han Mei has been identified as an exceptional illustration of industrial design by the A' Design Award. Erhu Chair won the Bronze A' Design Award in Furniture Design in 2023. The A' Furniture Design Award is an international, meritocratic, just and fair design accolade that rewards excellent design of chairs, tables, sofas, beds, cabinets, shelves, desks, wardrobes and more.
